There's been a lot of feedback on the SQLite blog (below). I think we all pretty much agree: it would be best as a plugin, so that's what we'll do. Also, that way, if you want to use MySQL, Oracle, or anything else, you can do that instead. (We plan to be releasing the C source to those interfaces when we have the plugin ready.)
